Societal Pressure on Marriage: A Woman’s Reflection

Recently, my neighbor dropped by to visit my Mum, and in a gesture of hospitality, I offered her tea and some snacks. While she appreciated the tea, expressing how much she loved it, her parting blessing was singular for me to marry into a good family and find a good husband. This made me think deeply about the societal pressure on marriage, especially on women.

Now, don’t get me wrong; there was no ill intent, and it wasn’t hurtful.

The Blessing That Sparked a Thought

However, as I sat later, sipping my evening coffee, I couldn’t help but ponder. Why is marriage often portrayed as the ultimate goal for women, and why does it come with an unrelenting timeline?

The Pressure of Timelines

The questions never seem to stop like when will you get married, have kids, buy assets, and so forth? Societal pressures are undeniable.

Even when I feel content being on my own, friends and family look at me with pity. They assure me that good things will come in due time. I’ve stopped explaining that I am fine alone and won’t settle until I find the partner I truly want.

People in their late twenties and early thirties often desire a speedy path to marriage, treating it as a significant life milestone. Some opt for a quick wedding to concentrate on their careers and pursue long-awaited dreams.

However, It’s not anybody’s fault; we are just conditioned that way, and moving out of the conventional line means upsetting some people, at least. It made me realize how deeply ingrained societal expectations are, adhering to a conventional timeline that dictates the ‘right’ time for each life milestone.

Redefining the Goal

I believe we need to shift the narrative. Marriage shouldn’t be seen as an ulterior goal for a woman’s life; instead, it should be celebrated as a grand event, a personal choice that propels her forward in becoming a better person.
