Since childhood, I always heard my relatives and parents saying I would become a doctor. Growing up, my love for science made it a natural choice for me to pursue medicine. Despite working hard, I couldn’t secure a spot in a medical college. However, I did get the opportunity to become a dentist. The journey to becoming a dentist came with its own set of struggles, but looking back, it was all worth it.
During my internship, seeing my patients leave satisfied and feeling better after treatment gave me a profound sense of fulfillment. Over time, someone pointed out to me that my empathy was a driving force behind my desire to help others. It made me realize that perhaps my parents and relatives sensed this empathetic quality in me before I did.
Now, as I look around, I see some individuals who blindly pursued a profession dictated by their parents’ wishes, only to find themselves unsatisfied. I can’t help but feel fortunate that I didn’t regret my decision to become a dentist.
Reflecting on my journey, I would urge parents and future parents not to impose their dreams onto their children. Instead, encourage them to follow their passions and assure them of your support and guidance regardless of their chosen path. Children simply want their parents to be there for them, offering genuine support, especially in a world that can be harsh and opportunistic.
If you resonate with my thoughts or have a different opinion, I would love to hear from you. Let’s connect and share our perspectives.
